Historical Context

After the September 2001 attacks, the White House accelerated security upgrades that had already been planned for the Situation Room. Renovation began in August 2006, gutting the complex and, after four-and-a-half months, was completed in May 2007, adding cellular-signal sensors and a direct Air Force One feed used by President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair. The ongoing need for such upgrades now fuels debate over new funding requests.
