History

Historical Context

In 2008 Indian-born novelist Aravind Adiga became the fourth Indian-born author to win the Booker Prize, a award that until 2014 accepted only Commonwealth, Irish or South African writers. The 2014 rule change opened eligibility to any English-language novel, spurring greater Asian and translated submissions and paving the way for later International Booker recognitions of non-Western voices.
