Historical Context

After Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000, Hezbollah intensified cross-border raids, culminating in the 34-day 2006 Lebanon War that began on 12 July 2006. Hezbollah launched close to 4,000 rockets while Israel’s air and ground campaign caused over 1,200 civilian deaths, prompting UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and a cease-fire that still underlies today’s US-mediated 45-day extension and renewed drone strikes.
