Historical Context

The Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) began on 1 April 2000, replacing the 1991 Electricity Feed-in Act and guaranteeing 20-year feed-in tariffs, grid connection and preferential dispatch. It lifted renewables to 27.4 % of gross electricity by 2014, prompted revisions in 2004, 2009, 2012 and a 2014 auction-based overhaul, and the German government and European Commission now view it as a model for storage and grid-upgrade policies.
