Historical Context

After Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined NATO in March 2004, NATO started the Baltic Air Policing mission, rotating fighter patrols to protect their skies. Romania added an F-16 squadron in 2015, and by 2022 task deployed ten NATO jets that intercepted over 30 unauthorized flights annually. On 19 May 2026 a Romanian F-16, under NATO’s Quick Reaction Alert, shot down a Ukrainian drone over Estonia.
