History

Historical Context

In May 1868 General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic proclaimed “Decoration Day” for May 30 to honor Civil War dead. The observance spread to all northern states by 1890 and later became Memorial Day, a federal holiday on last Monday in May. In 2026 FDNY ceremony with VFW Post 12033 and a siren tribute by Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman echoed Logan’s aim.
