Historical Context

In December 2008 Israel launched Operation Cast Lead, a three-week assault on Gaza that killed roughly 1,400 Palestinians and destroyed about 70 % of UNRWA’s medical stockpiles. The blockade and limited reconstruction left Gaza vulnerable, and in May 2024 Israeli airstrikes on Nuseirat and Bureij again hit Hamas sites, prompting fresh warnings from UNRWA and Human Rights Watch.
