During the 1988 Iran–Iraq War, the United States launched Operation Praying Mantis on 18 April, destroying two Iranian oil platforms and sinking the frigate Sahand and the fast-attack craft Joshan after Iran’s mining of the frigate Samuel B. Roberts. The strike helped push Iran toward a July cease-fire. Today, U.S. forces again target Iranian missile sites while Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani seeks a new cease-fire in the Strait of Hormuz.
