Restored Hammer Classic ‘Horror of Dracula’ Set for Halloween Re-Release

John Gore Studios, owner of the Hammer Horror Films label, will issue a fully restored 4K version of Hammer’s 1958 *Horror of Dracula* starring Christopher Lee. The film returns to cinemas in October 2026 for the Halloween season, with a home-video window to follow. The new print reinserts roughly three minutes of footage removed in 1958, including the original death sequence and a previously trimmed vampire-victim encounter. The missing material was located in a Warner Brothers storage vault near Los Angeles.

At the 1958 premiere, censors labeled the film’s blood-spattered attacks and a sexually charged vampire scene “too gruesome,” prompting cuts that removed about three minutes. Contemporary newspaper reports recorded audience members fainting during Lee’s fanged assaults, illustrating the period’s low tolerance for graphic horror.

John Gore leads the effort, with makeup artist Philip Leakey having designed Lee’s iconic fangs after the actor requested “more teeth.” Peter Cushing appears as Van Helsing in the restored print. Silver Salt Restoration performed the 4K scan, opting against an 8K version for practicality. Hammer’s output totals 165 titles, roughly 40 of which are horror films.

He notes that a 4K release balances visual fidelity with practical limits and that the restored title initiates a broader program to reassess the entire Hammer library. The studio plans to evaluate all 165 titles for further restoration, targeting additional vampire, werewolf, mummy and non-horror genre entries.
