In 1998 Marco Pantani seized the pink jersey on the Marmolada, winning the Giro by about one and a half minutes and also taking the mountains classification. The 2024 edition reproduced that mountain drama, with a three-way podium on the Carì, Blockhaus and Pila climbs and Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard’s Visma-Lease a Bike team leading, prompting the Italian Cycling Federation to overhaul its development program.
