Donald E. Newhouse, Newspaper Pioneer, Dies at 96

Donald Edward Newhouse died of lymphoma on May 26, 2026 at his Lambertville, New Jersey home. His son Steven Newhouse confirmed the death to The New York Times. At 96, Newhouse had overseen the newspaper division of Advance Publications for nearly five decades.

Advance Publications, founded by Samuel Irving Newhouse Sr. in 1922, passed to Donald and his brother Samuel I. “Si” Newhouse Jr. after their father’s 1979 death. Donald managed newspapers and cable assets, while Si ran Condé Nast magazines. He was president of the Star-Ledger and chaired the Newspaper Association of America (1993-94) and the AP board (1997-2002).
