Historical Context

After Israel pulled its forces from southern Lebanon in 2000, Hezbollah seized the border zone and, citing the Shebaa Farms dispute, resumed cross-border raids. The 12 July 2006 ambush sparked a 34-day war in which Hezbollah launched roughly 4,000 rockets and UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (11 August 2006) imposed a cease-fire. Today’s IDF strikes south of the Zahrani River echo that unresolved cycle.
