Pentagon Appoints Shaun Maguire to New Science, Technology and Innovation Board

The Defense Department created the Science, Technology and Innovation Board (STIB) by merging the Defense Innovation Board (2016) and the Defense Science Board (1956). The 33-member board is described as a “single, unified voice for innovation” that will replace competing recommendations with “fast, coherent guidance” to equip the Joint Force and accelerate delivery of new weapons.

Shaun Maguire, a partner at Sequoia Capital, joins the board. His biography lists degrees from the University of Southern California, Stanford and Caltech and notes leadership of investments in SpaceX, The Boring Company, X, xAI, AMP Robotics, Bridge, Decart, Eon, Factory, Vise and Lightmatter. He co-founded Expanse, a cybersecurity firm serving the Department of War and the intelligence community, and previously contracted with DARPA, including a three-month Afghanistan deployment in 2012.

Maguire attracted criticism for Islam-related comments about New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. In July he wrote that Mamdani came from a culture he alleged was dishonest and pursued an Islamist agenda, and later described Mamdani and his father as left-wing Islamists. Over 800 tech founders signed an open letter describing the remarks as a purposeful, inflammatory assault that encourages harmful anti-Muslim stereotypes. After the December 2023 Brown University shooting and MIT professor murder, Maguire suggested a Palestinian student was responsible, indicating it was highly probable the student was behind the attacks.

The Pentagon declined to comment on Maguire’s appointment. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who announced the board, has previously opposed diversity, equity and inclusion programs and is expected to share a perspective with Maguire, a known supporter of former President Donald Trump. The board’s public description emphasizes rapid, coherent guidance for the Joint Force.
