Kanye West Launches European Tour with Istanbul Concert Amid Ban Controversy

On Saturday, Kanye West—performing under the name Ye—will headline a concert at Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium. The show marks the opening of his first European tour in 11 years and follows cancellations in the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland and Poland. The performance will take place on a globe-shaped stage, and alcohol is prohibited inside the venue.

West’s tour was disrupted after he posted the phrase “I Love Nazis” on social media, sold T-shirts bearing a swastika, and released a song titled “Heil Hitler.” In response, the UK government denied him entry, and France, Switzerland and Poland imposed similar bans, prompting the relocation of his European dates to Istanbul.

The Istanbul concert is organized by Erdem Karahan, founder of ILS Vision, in partnership with TemaCC. Turkish opening acts include Sena Sener, Motive, Lvbel C5, Yener Cevik, Mavi and Pera. Karahan has indicated that U.S. rapper Travis Scott may join Ye for the collaborative track “Father,” and that Ye’s daughter North West is also slated to appear.

Organizers target a maximum audience of 120,000, with 75,000 tickets already sold. Karahan has said that reaching 99,000 attendees would break the record for the largest single concert. He also projected ancillary revenue from foreign visitors between $50 million and $100 million, covering accommodation, transport and food-beverage spending.
