History

Historical Context

In 2006 Japan and the Philippines signed a Defense Cooperation Agreement that funded ¥10 billion of patrol vessels and limited Japan to non-lethal aid. After the 2024–2025 Reciprocal Access Agreement, which expands joint training and equipment sharing, Manila now seeks Japanese Abukuma-class destroyers under President Marcos Jr. and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. China warns the move could cement a Japan-Philippines security bloc and test ASEAN unity.
