Historical Context

In July 2006 Hezbollah’s raid that captured two Israeli soldiers triggered Israel’s full-scale invasion of southern Lebanon. Israeli forces seized Bint Jbeil, air-and sea-blocked the country, and UN estimates say more than 1 million Lebanese were displaced before the UN-brokered ceasefire on 14 August 2006. The war’s stalemate spurred heightened U.S. diplomatic pressure and calls for Hezbollah’s disarmament.
