Historical Context

Discussions in 1987 birthed the International Ocean Network (1993) and a 1995 committee that laid groundwork for a U.S. ocean observatory. The NSF approved the Ocean Observatories Initiative in 2000, began construction in 2009, and commissioned 900 sensors by 2016. After the 2018 removal of two global arrays, the 2024 NSF decision to descale draws criticism from Governor Gavin Newsom and Senator Chris Van Hollen.
