On 18 April 1988, after Iran mined the U.S. frigate Samuel B. Roberts on 14 April, United States launched Operation Praying Mantis, sinking two Iranian frigates and destroying oil platforms. Ordered by President Ronald Reagan and opposed by Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini, the attack pushed Iran toward July cease-fire that ended Iran-Iraq war. Limited crossing of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz recalls that 1988 naval showdown.
