Historical Context

Patriot missiles first saw combat in the 1991 Gulf War, where U.S. batteries in Saudi Arabia attempted to intercept more than 40 Iraqi Scuds amid disputed success. Since 2023 three Patriot batteries have operated in Ukraine, downing Russian aircraft and missiles. In 2024 President Zelensky again urged the United States and NATO for additional Patriot interceptors to protect Kyiv.
