Historical Context

In April 1941 Danish envoy Henrik Kauffmann signed an executive agreement letting the United States defend Greenland, paving the way for the establishment of Thule Air Base. Denmark joined NATO in 1949, and a 1951 Greenland Defense Agreement incorporated the base into NATO’s Arctic deterrent, a role that persists with about 150 U.S. service members stationed there in 2025.
