On 5 April 1992 President Alberto Fujimori carried out a self-coup, dissolving Congress and suspending the constitution with military backing. The subsequent 22 November elections gave his Cambio 90–New Majority 44 of 80 seats, leading to the 1993 constitution that reshaped Peru’s political system. Today’s 7 June runoff between his daughter Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sánchez tests that legacy amid a fragmented Congress.
