Cinematheque Revives Theatre

American Cinematheque will act as programmer, manager and operating partner of the Village Theatre under a 2025 nonprofit pact.
Renovation will start in fall 2026, last twelve months, target a 2027 reopening with a new lobby adding concessions, retail space and filmmaker artifact displays, funded by proceeds from a three-week 70 mm engagement.
Year-round festivals including Beyond Fest, Bleak Week, This Is Not a Fiction and Ultra Cinematheque 70 will be programmed, with VDC members J.J. Abrams, Ryan Coogler, Steven Spielberg and Denis Villeneuve.

History

Historical Context

IMAX debuted its first permanent theatre, the Cinesphere in Toronto, in May 1971. After introducing lower-cost digital projection in 2008, the chain grew from about 300 screens in 2007 to more than 1,300 locations worldwide by 2015. Today, Universal Pictures and filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan are using that legacy to revive large-format releases.
