History

Historical Context

On April 20 1999, seniors Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 students and a teacher at Columbine High School, then died by suicide. The attack became the deadliest U.S. K-12 school shooting until the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre and has been linked to more than 70 copycat incidents, creating a “Columbine effect” that shapes responses to later tragedies such as the 2024 Muscatine, Iowa shooting.
