Before 1999 the NCAA tournament used only regional double-elimination rounds. In 1999 the NCAA expanded to a 64-team field, creating sixteen four-team regionals whose winners met in eight best-of-three super regionals, a format that still determines the eight College World Series participants in Omaha. Miami (FL) captured the 1999 championship under the new structure.
