Rezaei Blocks Meeting

Iranian senior adviser Mohsen Rezaei called a meeting between Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei and President Donald Trump impossible.
Tehran will not move forward until the United States releases $24 billion of frozen assets, said senior adviser Mohsen Rezaei.
He warned renewed U.S. strikes could spread the conflict into Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean.

History

Historical Context

In November 1979, Iranian students seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran, holding 66 Americans hostage for 444 days until the Algiers Accords freed them on 20 January 1981. The crisis prompted the United States to freeze roughly $8 billion of Iranian sovereign assets and to escrow nearly $8 billion through Algeria. Decades later, Iran again demands release of the frozen $24 billion, reviving the diplomatic standoff.
