Historical Context

In 1994 the General Assembly elected reunified Germany as a non-permanent Security Council member for 1995, winning 140 of 193 votes. Since then Germany has joined the G4, lobbying France, the United Kingdom and others for a permanent seat. Its 2026 bid, however, lost to Portugal and Austria, highlighting the continued competition for limited seats.
