Historical Context

In 2002 the Knesset enacted the Tal Law, following the Tal Committee’s recommendations, to preserve the long-standing exemption that allowed Haredi yeshiva students to defer military service. The law, which covered about 9.2 % of eligible conscripts in 1999, was declared unconstitutional by the Israeli Supreme Court in February 2012, prompting renewed protests by Haredi groups such as Netzah Yehuda and Har Etzion outside Jerusalem’s Lev HaBira station.
