Labour Demands Transparency Over Nigel Farage’s £5 Million Gift and Property Plans

Labour has asked Reform Party leader Nigel Farage to explain a £5 million personal gift from billionaire Christopher Harborne. The Guardian reported the gift arrived weeks before Farage reversed his decision not to stand as an MP in the 2024 election and later became MP for Clacton. He is under investigation by the parliamentary standards commissioner. Planning permission was also granted to redevelop a beachfront house in Greatstone, Kent, owned by Farage’s company Thorn in the Side Ltd.

Labour chair Anna Turley wrote that Farage’s “shifting accounts have raised further serious questions about whether you have broken parliamentary rules, about potential conflicts of interest and about whether you have told the truth.” The party said the public deserves a clear account. Farage’s spokesperson said Kent planning began before the gift, that the second application involves “more modest plans” and that no building has started. A Reform Party spokesperson added that anti-money-laundering checks were completed before the gift and that the TV-show fee covered the Surrey purchase.
