Ukraine Recaptures Over 600 sq km in 2026, Marking Net Frontline Gains

Ukrainian forces have reclaimed more than 600 sq km of territory since the start of 2026, with a net increase of about 100 sq km in May. Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi described the 1,200-km front as “difficult and dynamic.” The fiercest fighting remains in the Pokrovsk sector (Donetsk), the Oleksandrivka junction of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk, and the Huliaipole sector (Zaporizhzhia). The gains follow a 2022 invasion, a failed 2023 Ukrainian counter-offensive, and a renewed Ukrainian push in early 2026 that analysts say disrupted Moscow’s spring offensive.

In May, Ukrainian unmanned-systems struck over 88,000 Russian targets, reportedly killing or wounding more than 30,500 Russian troops. Deep-strike missions hit 111 Russian military-industrial, energy and fuel facilities, causing an estimated $1.058 billion in damage. Air-defence forces destroyed more than 59,000 aerial targets and repelled 25 missile attacks. The navy conducted roughly 1,500 operations, escorting 633 civilian vessels to Odesa and Danube ports.

Syrskyi stressed that Ukrainian forces retain the initiative in selected sectors despite a fluid front. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy cited the 600 sq km recapture as proof of progress. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov framed the “logistical lockdown” as a means to cripple Russian supply chains. Retired Australian Army Major-General Mick Ryan warned that while a “glimmer” of a turning point exists, the war’s deadliest phase traditionally falls in the second half of the year, making the upcoming fall a decisive test of Ukraine’s improved effectiveness.

Independent analysts note that drone-created “kill zones” complicate precise mapping of front-line control, leaving some territorial claims unverifiable. Ryan highlighted that Russia has not achieved “any real momentum” in its spring offensive, but he stressed that the fall could reveal whether Ukraine’s gains are durable. The lack of transparent, on-the-ground verification remains a key information gap.
