Historical Context

The Australian government opened Melbourne (Tullamarine) Airport in 1970, replacing Essendon after acquiring 5,300 ha in 1959 and starting construction in 1964. Prime Minister John Gorton’s project gave the new hub a design capacity for eight Boeing 707s and it handled 155,275 international passengers in its first year. Its 24-hour, curfew-free model set a precedent for later hubs such as Western Sydney Airport.
