Michael Mann’s “Manhunter” Returns in 4K “Final Cut” for 40th Anniversary

In 1986 Michael Mann adapted Thomas Harris’s novel *Red Dragon* as *Manhunter*. The film introduced the character Hannibal Lecktor (credited as “Lecktor”) and presented an early cinematic depiction of FBI profiling of serial killers. Although it was a box-office bomb at the time, the movie later earned recognition for pioneering a sub-genre of thriller cinema that focuses on psychological tracking of killers.

A new 4K scan of the original 35 mm negative—supplemented by a few interpositive shots—was performed at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna. Both the theatrical version and the UHD HDR/SDR color gradings were completed by Stefan Sonnenfeld at Company 3 in Los Angeles under Mann’s supervision. Sound restoration used the original 35 mm magnetic 6-track printmaster, producing a new 5.1 mix by Luke Schwartzweller at Fox. Technical coordination and deliveries were managed by L’Immagine Ritrovata, with overall supervision by Becca Mann, StudioCanal’s Jean-Pierre Boiget, and Delphine Roussel.
