On Oct 2 1968, President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz ordered the Mexican Armed Forces to fire on a peaceful rally of roughly 10,000 UNAM and IPN students in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, an event now known as the Tlatelolco massacre that killed an estimated 300 people. The repression of that 1968 student movement echoes today’s teacher and family protests demanding accountability for public-spending priorities.
