The Piccadilly line is a “deep-tube” route, with sections up to 67 metres below ground and infrastructure largely dating from the Victorian era. Designing rolling stock that fits the narrow tunnels while meeting modern passenger expectations required a bespoke solution, including new ventilation, signalling and station upgrades.
