Historical Context

After the 1969 Battle of the Bogside sparked the Troubles, the British Army introduced internment in August 1971, prompting NICRA’s protest march on 30 January 1972 in Derry’s Bogside. Soldiers of the 1st Parachute Regiment shot 26 unarmed civilians, killing 13. That massacre deepened sectarian anger and underlies today’s Belfast and Derry riots.
