Deezer Rolls Out Free Cross-Platform AI-Music Detector
On 11 June 2026, French streaming service Deezer launched a free online tool that scans playlists on 20 streaming platforms—including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, SoundCloud and Amazon Music—and flags tracks generated by AI models. The service works in 27 languages and requires only permission to read a user’s playlists.
AI-Music Surge and Deezer’s Tagging History
AI-generated songs have flooded streaming catalogs, raising copyright and fraud concerns. Deezer began tagging fully synthetic tracks on its own platform in early 2025, becoming the first major service to do so. It later licensed the detection technology to France’s collecting society Sacem and Hungary’s rights body EJI.
Scale of Synthetic Content on Deezer
Deezer reports roughly 75,000 AI-generated tracks uploaded daily, representing about 44 % of new music deliveries. Over 13.4 million such tracks were tagged in 2025. AI tracks account for only 1-3 % of total streams, yet up to 85 % of those streams were flagged as fraudulent and excluded from royalty payouts.
How the Detector Operates
The scanner looks for frequency artifacts—distinct spectral peaks—typical of generative models such as Suno and Udio. Deezer claims a detection accuracy of 99.8 %. After a user authorises access, the tool imports playlists, analyses each track, and presents a list of flagged items with an optional share button.
Responses
CEO Alexis Lanternier said the launch “makes it possible for everyone to check if their playlists include synthetic music, no matter which streaming platform they use,” adding that “a vast majority of people want to know if AI music is being recommended to them.” Apple Music’s optional “Transparency Tags” and Spotify’s voluntary labeling, “Verified” badges and AI-cover tool illustrate alternative industry approaches that rely on artist-driven disclosure rather than Deezer’s automated detection and removal.
Conflicting Figures
Sources differ on AI-generated upload share—44 % versus 39 %—and on daily counts, ranging from 60,000 to 75,000 tracks. Independent verification of the 85 % fraud-flag rate is lacking.
Verbatim Quotes
- “By detecting and tagging AI generated music over the past year and a half, Deezer has been at the forefront of transparency in music streaming,” — Alexis Lanternier, CEO, Deezer
- “The consumer pitch leans on a Deezer-commissioned survey published in November, which found that 97% of respondents could not tell fully AI-generated tracks from human-made music in a blind listening test.” — Deezer-Ipsos survey
- “Deezer has found that up to 85% of the streams generated by fully AI-generated tracks were in fact fraudulent in 2025.” — Deezer data
Outlook
Deezer is weighing supplier-policy updates and possible demonetization of synthetic tracks while promoting its detection stack to rights organisations. The company notes that industry pressure could prompt competitors to adopt comparable transparency tools.
