History

Historical Context

Somaliland proclaimed its restoration of sovereignty on 18 May 1991 after the Somali civil war, claiming succession from the 1960 State of Somaliland. While most of the world still views it as part of Somalia, Israel formally recognized it on 26 December 2025, and Taiwan has maintained de facto ties since 2020, now opening a new office in Taipei’s Tianmu district.
