Historical Context

In March 1971 Pakistan launched Operation Searchlight, sparking a nine-month Bangladesh Liberation War. India entered on 3 December 1971, supporting the Mukti Bahini, and after Pakistan’s surrender on 16 December 1971, Bangladesh emerged as an independent state. The conflict displaced roughly 10 million refugees into India, a legacy that now underpins India-Bangladesh joint border patrols. The war also became a Cold War flashpoint, involving the United States, the Soviet Union and China.
