History

Historical Context

In the late 1980s Gorbachev’s “Sinatra Doctrine” freed Central-Eastern Europe, spurring former Soviet bloc states to pursue EU membership. Ten countries, including Hungary and Poland, signed the Treaty of Accession on 16 April 2003 and joined on 1 May 2004, the EU’s largest single enlargement. That legacy fuels today’s drive to admit Ukraine and Moldova, conditioned on anti-corruption and media-freedom reforms.
