History

Historical Context

In 1917 King George V founded the Order of the British Empire with five classes to recognise civilian war effort, filling gaps left by older orders. A Military Division was added in 1918, and the order became the main UK honour for public service. The 2024 Birthday Honours knighting Kevin Sinfield, MBEs for the England Lionesses and Dame Helen Mirren as Companion of Honour.
