Mark Carney’s Irish Homecoming Highlights a Middle-Power Push Ahead of the G7

He met 20 cousins, including Pat Carney and Maureen O'Malley, and recalled that his grandparents Robert Carney and Nora Moran left Aughagower in 1925, married in Vancouver in 1926 and raised three sons on Lord Sligo’s estate.

At the De Chastelain Lecture in Trinity College Dublin, Carney said the rules-based order is “breaking down” and warned of a “global rupture.” He urged Canada, Ireland and Europe to build a “dense web of connections” as middle powers, noting Canada-EU population exceeds twice the United States and its defence budget twice China’s. He cited Canada’s entry into the EU’s SAFE programme and 56 critical-mineral partnerships.
