On 16 June 1976 black students in Soweto protested the Afrikaans-Medium Decree, and police killed 176 demonstrators and wounded over 1,000. In 1977 Hugh Masekela’s “Soweto Blues,” sung by Miriam Makeba, turned the uprising into a global anti-apartheid anthem.
