Affect-grid data showed a marked rise in positive affect after self-pleasure that persisted through sleep onset and into the morning, while arousal dropped sharply before sleep. A weak but positive correlation emerged between self-pleasure frequency and the occurrence of erotic dreams, strengthening when the activity occurred directly before sleep.

Official Interpretation

Muleta and Lastella stated that treating self-pleasure as an emotional and sensory relaxation technique could inform individualized sleep-hygiene recommendations. They also suggested that sleep specialists might eventually incorporate guided self-pleasure routines into personalized sleep-improvement plans.

Criticism & Limitations

The study relied exclusively on self-reported data, introducing recall bias for sleep latency and dream recall. The voluntary, online recruitment likely produced a self-selected sample more comfortable discussing intimate behaviors.
