On 16 June 1976 South African police opened fire on black schoolchildren protesting the Afrikaans-medium decree, killing 176 and sparking nationwide riots that later totaled 575 deaths by early 1977. The crackdown prompted ANC condemnation, a UN Security Council rebuke, and, after the IOC refused to bar New Zealand’s All Blacks tour, a 22-nation boycott of the Montreal Olympics.
