Catalysts of the Transformation
European defence budgets are rising, and Spain’s market now receives over €30 billion in annual investment. The country pursues a multi-domain modernisation programme backed by the Ministry of Defence, TEDAE and AESMIDE, while NATO, the European Union and the European Defence Agency are slated to attend the upcoming FEINDEF 27 exhibition. FEINDEF 27 – Madrid Defence Expo
Set for 2027, FEINDEF 27 is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Defence and expects more than 63 000 professional visitors, around 800 exhibitors, 400 delegations and over 100 heads of delegation within a 90 000 m² venue. The event will cover land, naval, air, space, cyber and emerging technologies.
ARQUIMEA Counter-Drone System
Unveiled on 15 June 2026, ARQUIMEA offers a layered C-UAS chain with a modular multi-launcher. Interceptors include Q-SLAM-40 (40 km), Q-SLAM-80i (25 km, 250 km/h), Q-SLAM-5i (>350 km/h, 0.4 kg) and Q-FOX (>600 km/h, 0.5 kg). Production facilities exceed 12 000 m², the €10 million investment enables up to 1 000 autonomous interceptors per month, and the system is already fielded by more than five armed forces.
Team Gen 6 – German-Spanish Fighter Alliance
Launched on 15 June 2026, Team Gen 6 is led by Airbus Defence and Space and unites eight German firms—including Hensoldt, Diehl Defence, MBDA Deutschland and MTU Aero Engines—with Spanish partners Indra, GMV and ITP Aero. The programme targets sixth-generation capabilities such as advanced sensor fusion, long-range weapons, unmanned teaming, combat-cloud integration and loyal-wingman concepts, aiming to preserve critical technology within Europe.
CAPINT – Interim Main Battle Tank
KNDS presented CAPINT at Eurosatory 2026, pairing a Leopard 2A8-derived 1 500 hp chassis with an unmanned Ascalon turret. The baseline armament is a 120 mm smoothbore (upgradeable to 140 mm) with a 22-round autoloader, complemented by an ARX30 30 mm remote weapon station (225 rpm, 1 500 m drone range). The vehicle integrates active-protection, 360° sensors and a digital backbone for UAV and robotic wingman integration; the three-person crew remains inside the hull.
Strategic Impact
Together, the exhibition, the counter-UAS system, the fighter alliance and the tank concept illustrate Europe’s drive for a sovereign, network-centric defence base. Autonomous effectors, cloud-enabled combat architectures and cross-national supply chains aim to counter emerging threats—particularly massed drone attacks—while reducing reliance on non-European technology.
Outlook
FEINDEF 27 will open in 2027, providing a platform for B2B deals and technology showcases. ARQUIMEA plans to expand interceptor output and test integration with NATO air-defence networks. Team Gen 6 targets a technology demonstrator by the early 2030s. CAPINT will undergo live-fire trials before possible adoption by the French Army as an interim capability. These steps chart a path toward a more autonomous, interoperable European defence ecosystem.
