Education Dept Cuts
- The U.S. Department of Education announced a 1% interest-rate cut for loans effective July 1, 2026-June 30, 2028 to ease repayment and improve health.
- The cut applies to borrowers with loans made after July 1, 2012 who enroll in auto-pay by Sept 30, 2026 and receive a 0.75% reduction (on top of a 0.25% discount).
- Defaulted borrowers must first consolidate and select a plan; 40% are in auto-pay, 9 million are in default, the portfolio totals $1.7 trillion.
