History

Historical Context

In July 1974 Turkey launched an air-sea invasion of northern Cyprus after a Greek-backed coup, eventually occupying about 37 % of the island and leading to the 1983 declaration of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Since 1993 roughly 1,200 UNFICYP troops have patrolled the Green Line, and today minister Hakan Fidan met EU envoy Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar in Ankara as the European Parliament condemned Ankara’s “Blue Homeland” doctrine.
