Historical Context

Australia’s undersea capability began with the domestically built Collins-class submarines, which entered service between 1996 and 2003 and are due to retire by 2026. To bridge the gap, Defence Minister Peter Dutton approved a $6 billion life-extension programme and, following 2014-15 design work for a next-generation conventional fleet, the navy continues to base its submarines at HMAS Stirling.
