Israel Recognises Somaliland and President Abdullahi’s State Visit: Strategic Partnership and Regional Fallout

Visit
On 14-15 June 2026 President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro/Irro) made Somaliland’s state visit to Israel, meeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, laying a wreath at Theodor Herzl’s grave and opening an embassy in West Jerusalem. Somaliland, which declared independence in 1991, remained unrecognised until Israel’s 26 December 2025 recognition – the first by a UN member. Israel said it felt “natural sympathy” for a small people and seeks influence over Red Sea corridor, especially Bab al-Mandeb Strait targeted by Houthi attacks.
Cooperation
The declaration includes security training, water-management courses by MASHAV, health aid via Save a Child’s Heart and projects in minerals, oil and fisheries. Defence Minister Israel Katz said the partnership has operated “under the radar” and will reach “new heights.” Somaliland Defence Minister Mohamed Yusuf Ali told Reuters there is no Israeli base but Israel is helping train police and military.
Responses
Netanyahu said Israel’s recognition was “a very natural thing” because “we remember as a small people… we have a natural sympathy to you.” Abdullahi thanked Israel for “showing courage.” Israeli officials framed the tie as meeting security needs. Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud called the step “one of the darkest days in Somalia’s history” and a “trap.” The OIC called the embassy “illegal” and a breach of UN resolutions.
Opposition
Somalia’s government called the engagement a violation of its sovereignty and warned of “all necessary measures.” The Arab League, Arab Parliament, African Union and Arab states issued condemnations. Islamist groups Al-Shabaab and Hamas denounced the embassy as a betrayal of Muslims and a step toward “Judaisation” of Jerusalem.
Gaps
Israeli officials have hinted at military facilities, while Somaliland officials say they “cannot rule out” a base, though the Somaliland Defence Minister denied a current base. A Western diplomat and an Israeli brigadier claimed an Israeli naval presence and a base, but neither side confirmed these reports.
