Electrification Takes Center Stage at Bonn Talks Ahead of COP31

The Bonn preparatory session for the UN climate summit placed electrification—electric vehicles, heat pumps, and industry—at the centre of negotiations. Turkish minister Murat Kurum and co-president Australia proposed a 35 % electricity share in final energy by 2035, calling it essential for Paris targets.

Adaptation coordinator Pooja Dave called the failure to meet the tripling adaptation finance goal “clear bad faith”. Saudi Arabia, Arab states, India and Kenya opposed language reaffirming IPCC findings and the 1.5 °C limit, while at-risk nations demanded stronger scientific references, creating a stalemate.
