Historical Context

In July 1987, after Kuwait asked for protection, the United States re-flagged Kuwaiti tankers and launched Operation Earnest Will, deploying convoys guarded by three warships, a carrier group and later more than 30 warships to shield tankers from Iranian attacks. The 1987 mining of the supertanker Bridgeton showed how escort and re-flagging can keep the Strait of Hormuz open, a lesson echoed in today’s temporary closure.
